Child fatally struck by driver in hospital parking lot
Incident remains under investigation, according to Albuquerque police
A 4-year-old girl died Thursday after being hit by a pickup truck in the parking lot of Presbyterian Hospital in Downtown Albuquerque.
Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said the driver in a pickup with a trailer was heading south on Cedar Street by the hospital. As the girl and her father were walking in a crosswalk, the driver turned right and hit the girl.
"They took her to the emergency room, but, unfortunately, she succumbed to her wounds," he said.
Gallegos said police are looking at Presbyterian's video surveillance.
"It's not clear why he made the turn, or why they didn't see him making the turn," he said. "It's just a really terrible tragedy. Whether there's any fault ... is yet to be determined."
By Thursday evening, Gallegos said the driver showed "no signs of impairment" and no charges had been filed.
