In November, for seemingly no reason, someone shattered the front window at SunCare Salon on Coors.

Though common, window repairs can hit small businesses hard, said owner Andreas "Rick" Presseler.

"It just knocks you down," Presseler said.

To help with the unexpected costs of vandalism, the city of Albuquerque has an ongoing grant program to reimburse area businesses for costly broken window repair.

Presseler's business received a grant after the November incident, which he said took a big financial weight off his shoulders.

The city still has $140,000 worth of grants left for businesses in need, said city spokesperson Sara Mannal, who encouraged owners to apply.

The city first announced the grant round in October and has distributed nearly $60,000 so far.

What you need to know

The grants will reimburse businesses for up to 80% of repair costs, with the maximum grant amount per business being $4,000.

The city will reimburse up to $3,000 for a standard repair, but can go up to $4,000 if business owners install security glass or use environmentally friendly materials.

The grants are available to brick-and-mortar local businesses within the city limits that have 25 or fewer employees. Funds are also available to nonprofits and small education institutions.

To apply, businesses need to submit a police report, timestamped photos of damage and completed repairs and fill out an Albuquerque Police Department security survey.

The program began in 2020 and was renewed in 2024 and 2025.

The city will accept applications and dole out grants on a rolling basis until all funds are used, Mannal said.
