Del Norte High School student charged after allegedly bringing gun to campus
A 17-year-old student has been charged after Albuquerque Public Schools police officers found a firearm in a bush outside Del Norte High School on Monday.
“Let me be clear: the possession of any weapon, particularly a gun, on school grounds is a violation of our rules and regulations,” Del Norte Assistant Principal Mark Ramirez said in a letter that went out to families Monday. “This incident warrants severe consequences for the student involved, up to and including expulsion and potential prosecution.”
The 2nd Judicial District Attorney's Office charged the teen Tuesday with unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon on school premises, according to a Facebook post. A detention hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, the post states.
On Monday, the school received a report of a student carrying a handgun on campus. When APS officers and the school resource officer attempted to detain the student, he ran down the hallway, exited the building and ran off campus, he said.
Officers pursued the boy across Montgomery NE and into a nearby business parking lot, where he was arrested, Ramirez said. Officers then found a firearm in a nearby bush.
An APS spokesperson declined to comment. It is unclear what grade the student is in.
“I want to acknowledge the swift response and efforts made by the Albuquerque Public Schools Police Department in de-escalating the situation and detaining the student involved,” Ramirez said. “Their prompt action helped mitigate the threat.”
He said it’s important for community members to continue reporting “any suspicious activity.”
“Every reported threat, no matter how seemingly insignificant, will be treated with utmost seriousness,” Ramirez said.
