Española Police still seeking suspect in fatal Dandy's Burgers parking lot shooting
Victim, 38, died en route to hospital; 5 shell casings from 9mm firearm found at scene
ESPAÑOLA — Local police are still searching for the person or persons responsible for the death of a 38-year-old Española man, who was found fatally wounded by two gunshots in his vehicle in the parking lot of Dandy's Burgers a week ago.
Speaking with the Journal about the incident this week, Española Police Chief Mizel Garcia said Leon Salazar died Friday, Jan. 16, while en route by ambulance to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.
He had been shot in the neck and the abdomen, Garcia said.
Officers executed a search warrant on Salazar's white Nissan Infiniti following his death near an apartment complex on Calle Pajarito, Garcia said. Investigators recovered five 9mm shell casings, which police believe were fired from a pistol.
An obituary for Salazar posted to the Devargas Funeral Home website on Jan. 16 said he was a father of four who enjoyed working on cars and going for long drives with his family.
