NM Department of Transportation says to expect 'heavy travel delays'

Interstate 25 Montgomery Boulevard interchange to close down for bridge work Tuesday night and Wednesday night.

Interstate 25 drivers passing through Montgomery Boulevard in Albuquerque can expect "heavy travel delays" overnight both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, the New Mexico Department of Transportation will start setting 12 bridge beams, each weighing up to 83 tons and spanning 168 feet, NMDOT spokesperson Kristine Mihelcic said in a news release.

"This bridge beam work marks a major project milestone in widening the Montgomery Boulevard bridge and improving safety and travel reliability along this critical corridor," she said. "Safety is our top priority, and we are working closely with the contractor to ensure that all work areas are properly marked and that access roads remain safe for all users."

To accommodate the work, northbound and southbound I-25 will be closed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. at the interchange. Traffic will be detoured onto the frontage road at the Montgomery off-ramps, over Montgomery and back onto the freeway via the Montgomery on-ramps, she said.

The work will also cause Montgomery/Montaño to close between Culture Drive and the northbound frontage road. Traffic will be detoured to Comanche through Carlisle and Jefferson on the east side of I-25 and Culture and Edith on the west side of the interstate, Mihelcic said.

"Motorists should anticipate heavy travel delays and are encouraged to plan alternate routes when possible," she said. "(In addition,) these construction activities will increase overnight noise, vibration, dust and lighting for nearby properties."

The work is part of the I-25 Montgomery and Comanche improvements project, which began in August 2024 and is slated to be completed in spring 2027.
