An inmate died at University of New Mexico Hospital on Thursday after apparently trying to kill himself inside the jail, according to a news release from the Metropolitan Detention Center.

MDC spokesperson Candace Hopkins said 43-year-old Josh Sandoval was pronounced dead at UNMH. She said Sandoval had been at the hospital since Wednesday, when a corrections officer found him "in distress" in MDC's E Unit.

"It appears Sandoval attempted suicide," Hopkins said.

Sandoval was booked into the jail on Jan. 28 after being charged with several counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to court records. Sandoval had been arrested after allegedly trying to run over multiple people with his vehicle.

Hopkins said the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and the MDC Office of Professional Standards are investigating Sandoval's apparent suicide.

"The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator will determine the official cause of death," she said.
