It's a test. It's only a test: Sandia Labs plans some 'experiments' that could startle the public

Note to self, Albuquerqueans: If you hear a big boom, followed by a big fireball, then see some smoke in the coming weeks, don't be alarmed. Sandia's just trying something out.

During the last two weeks of the month, starting on Monday, Sandia National Laboratories is planning "controlled fire experiments" around 6 a.m. at the labs' Lurance Canyon Burn Site on Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia Labs spokesman Luke Frank said in a recent news release.

"A loud boom may be audible, and a fireball followed by a ring of black smoke emanating from the base might be visible in the Albuquerque area during the tests," he said. "Each test will last approximately 10 seconds."

Frank said the experiments are being done in compliance with "all applicable environmental regulations" and in support of Sandia's missions focused on national security.

The test dates and time are subject to change based on the weather, Frank said.
