Large flames erupt alongside Interstate 25 near Comanche
Plumes of smoke billowed into the sky as firefighters battled mammoth flames in an industrial area alongside Interstate 25 near Comanche.
Around 5:30 p.m., Albuquerque Fire Rescue and Bernalillo County Fire Rescue responded to a fire at a property in the 800 block of Nikanda NE, east of Edith and Comanche.
As of about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the fire was under control. The cause is being investigated, AFR spokesperson Lt. Jason Fejer said.
Fejer said the property owner was injured in the blaze. No other details were given.
The fire, which extended to the east and south, caught the attention of dozens of spectators, who watched the flames from a nearby hill.
Premier Distributing Co. worker Nathin Toms said, initially, it appeared some pallets caught fire. He said as the wind whipped the smoke and flames toward the distribution office, employees were told by police and their superiors to evacuate.
“It was about half the size when we (first) came over,” he said. “All the pallets behind it were on fire and the wind was blowing this way.”
The city received wind gusts of up to 38 mph on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service of Albuquerque. A red flag warning was in effect until 9 p.m.
