An Albuquerque man is on the run after allegedly shooting another man, then holding a driver at gunpoint in eastern New Mexico on Saturday.

Alex Gutierrez, 24, is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to a criminal complaint filed at Guadalupe County Magistrate Court, Gutierrez was arrested Sept. 12 in Santa Rosa after driving a vehicle reported stolen in Albuquerque. Court records state he did not make a plea at his initial appearance and was released on bond. He has a preliminary examination scheduled for Oct. 1.

Meanwhile, New Mexico State Police spokesperson Ray Wilson said that at 12:21 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a call of a shooting in the 600 block of West High Street, near West Railroad Avenue, in Tucumcari.

Police said when they arrived, they learned Gutierrez and an unidentified man knocked on a door of people they knew. After the occupants, a man and a woman, opened the door, Gutierrez said his backpack was inside their home and demanded they give it to him.

Wilson said after the woman threw the backpack toward Gutierrez, he and the male occupant got into an argument before Gutierrez shot him in the abdomen. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition.

Police said the two men then fled on foot before holding a person in a car at gunpoint, forcing the person to drive to another street before fleeing the area. Wilson said Gutierrez and the other man are still at large.

“Gutierrez should be considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached,” Wilson said.

Quay County Crime Stoppers posted on Facebook they are offering up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to Gutierrez’s arrest. They said people can call 575-461-3507.

State Police said people with information also could call 575-382-2500 then press option 1.
