Man fatally struck by driver after lying down in road in North Valley
Albuquerque police say a driver fatally struck a homeless man who lay down in the road Tuesday evening after being kicked out of a North Valley eatery.
Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque police spokesman, said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver "spoke with responding officers, but left before investigators could question him."
"The investigation remains ongoing," he said.
Preliminary investigation found that security kicked the man out of a Thai restaurant at Corrales and Alameda NW, Gallegos said. The man "was upset" and crossed Alameda before he stood "stationary for a significant period" in the last lane.
"As a vehicle approached, the man laid down on the roadway, at which point the vehicle ran over him," he said. "The man sustained critical injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by (Albuquerque Fire Rescue) personnel."
The driver pulled into the parking lot of a nearby restaurant and talked to responding officers but left before being questioned by detectives, Gallegos said.
