A man was killed after being hit by a train rolling through Las Cruces on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred early in the afternoon, with emergency responders dispatched a little before 2 p.m. to the 1700 block of S. Main Street, where the tracks run parallel to a busy stretch of road connecting downtown to University Avenue and at the Interstate 10 interchange, including several crossings through city traffic.

First responders found a man, who had not been identified as of Wednesday night, unresponsive with multiple injuries after being struck by a northbound BNSF freight train. Las Cruces police reported that he was declared dead at the scene.

The investigation briefly snarled traffic between Boutz Road and Valley Drive, affecting two railroad crossings until the train resumed its travel.

No further information was immediately available, as police said the man’s next of kin was being notified and an investigation into the circumstances was underway.
