Journal Wins Overall General Excellence Award

          The Albuquerque Journal won the overall General Excellence award for its newspaper division, while the Journalist of the Year award went to Journal investigative reporter Mike Gallagher on Saturday.
        Gallagher was recognized for his investigative series on a scandal involving New Mexico government pension investments. He also won first place for series or continuous coverage.
        The New Mexico Press Association and New Mexico Associated Press Managing Editors announced the winners of the 2010 Better Newspapers Contest at their annual meeting Saturday. The Journal walked away with nine first place awards.
        Jeff Proctor won a first place award for breaking news story. He and Hailey Heinz also won first place for news writing.
        Ken Sickenger won first place for sports writing.
        Lloyd Jojola took first place for obituary news.
        Pat Vasquez-Cunningham was awarded first place for general news photo.
        Richard Metcalf took home two second place awards, one for series or continuous coverage and another for investigative reporting.
        Amanda Schoenberg took second place for feature writing. Toby Smith took second place for sports columns.
        The Journal's Morgan Petroski won first place for sports photo in the Weekly Division 1 category for the Mountain View Telegraph, while Vasquez-Cunningham took second place for feature photo in the same category for work published in the Mountain View Telegraph.
        Judy Giannettino got first place for supplements & special editions.
        Journal staff won first place for design and typography.
        The first place black and white advertising award went to Jeremy Montoya. A second place color advertising award went to Roseanne Grant.
        The Clovis News-Journal won the overall General Excellence award for its division.
        The Associated Press Member of the Year award went to the Alamogordo Daily News. The award is presented each year to the AP member newspaper that best exhibits the news-sharing spirit of the AP cooperative.
