UNM Grad Earns Science Foundation Fellowship

    AROUND TOWN: New Mexico native Louis Metzger IV, who is pursuing his Ph.D. in biochemistry at Duke University, has received a 2005 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship.
    The award is given to outstanding graduate students who demonstrate the potential to become experts and who can contribute significantly to research, teaching and innovations in science and engineering, according to NSF.
    Metzger, the son of Louis Metzger III and Janet Metzger of Albuquerque, is a 2000 valedictorian of Cibola High School. A UNM Regents' Scholar, Metzger graduated summa cum laude in biochemistry in 2004. As an undergraduate, he achieved national recognition for receiving the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for Excellence in Education in Science, Mathematics and Engineering. In July 2004, Metzger began graduate study at Duke University's doctoral program in biochemistry as a James B. Duke Fellow.
    ALL SCHOOL REUNION SET: The annual All School Reunion in Tucumcari is set for Aug. 4-7. Festivities begin Aug. 4 with an early bird mixer from 5-9 p.m. at the Tucumcari Convention Center. Other events include a golf tournament, barbecue, dance, the All Class parade, luncheons, cards to be signed for military alumni and a banquet. Cost is $35.     U.S. NAVAL GRAD: U.S. Navy Ensign Michael Miller, son of Charles and Laurie Miller, recently graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy. Following graduation, Miller was assigned to Pensacola, Fla., where he will begin flight training to become a naval aviator.
    Miller, a 2001 graduate of Eldorado High School, earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering.
    The Naval Academy focuses on the educational needs of the Navy and Marine Corps.
