Astorga Indicted In 2005 Murder Case
Journal Staff Report
Michael Paul Astorga, indicted last Friday for the March 22 shooting death of Deputy James McGrane Jr., now faces an open murder count and other charges in the unrelated Nov. 5, 2005, death of Candido Martinez.
The Bernalillo County grand jury on Tuesday returned an indictment for open murder, tampering with evidence and being a felon in possession of a firearm or destructive device.
The charges stem from the shooting death last November in Albuquerque of the 27-year-old Martinez in what police described as a dispute over a car. Police also said Astorga and Martinez had been childhood friends.
Astorga, 29, who was caught in Juárez early this month after a 13-day manhunt following the shooting of the 38-year-old deputy, remains held without bond at the state penitentiary in Santa Fe.
