On that next drive to Navajo Lake State Park, stop by Navajo Lake Marina, which recently invested in millions of dollars’ worth of improvements.

The $4 million project includes the replacement of docks that were destroyed in an August storm that produced over 80 mph winds, Navajo Dam Enterprises co-owner Jarrett Johnson said in a news release.

Work began in December and is slated to be finished Thursday, a month ahead of schedule, he told the Journal.

Everything is “looking beautiful for the upcoming boating season,” Johnson said.

The work was needed after several docks and three boathouses — dating back to the 1960s — were destroyed in the storm, he said.

New dock additions will feature covered slips ranging from 24 feet to 75 feet in length. They also include wider walkways, higher rooflines and modern amenities “that the discerning boater would seek,” Johnson said.

The new docks are floated using polyethylene encapsulated floats, “which is an environmentally friendly option as opposed to the old, exposed Styrofoam floatation,” he said.

The docks were designed and built by dock builder Meeco Sullivan.

Over the past 10 years, 90% of all the docks and infrastructure were replaced and the marina has grown from 267 slips to 525 slips, Johnson said.

In 2017, the Marina added a new store, restaurant, boat rental office, gas dock, splash pad and fishing hole.

Navajo Lake Marina, which was established in 1964, is open year-round and has had visitors from as far away as China and Australia, he said.
