NMDOT seeks input on proposed roundabout near Edgewood
Roundabout would address traffic flow and safety concerns at N.M. 333 and N.M. 217 intersection, according to NMDOT
The New Mexico Department of Transportation announced last week it is looking to put in a roundabout at the intersection of N.M. 333 (old Route 66) and N.M. 217, about 4 miles west of Edgewood, in order to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes.
"During the morning and evening rush hours, traffic regularly backs up, especially on N.M. 217, and there have also been several injury crashes at this location," according to the project website.
NMDOT conducted a study of the intersection, which evaluated traffic operations, driver behavior and safety performance "to determine the most effective improvements," according to the website.
In the study, NMDOT said it found that:
- Most drivers traveled 6 to 8 mph over the speed limit. "These higher speeds were identified as a contributing factor to the severity of crashes at the intersection," according to NMDOT.
- Northbound and southbound traffic on N.M. 217 often experience long wait times when attempting to turn on N.M. 333. "These delays can lead to driver frustration and increase the likelihood of risky or dangerous turning maneuvers," the website states.
NMDOT said it has looked at two options to address these concerns: put in a traffic signal or a roundabout.
While each would improve traffic flow and reduce the number of crashes, according to NMDOT, "the analysis showed that a roundabout would provide the greatest overall benefit by significantly reducing traffic delays and improving safety."
"In addition, a roundabout is more cost-effective to construct and maintain over time."
NMDOT announced that a public meeting will take place sometime in "mid-March." In the meanwhile, it is encouraging people to fill out a survey.
"While the traffic and safety analysis indicates a roundabout is the best option for the intersection," the website states, "NMDOT would also like to hear your questions and comments about the proposed intersection improvements."
