Lion dances, martial arts light up Lunar New Year

Ribbons rippled through the air while lions pranced through the streets to celebrate the Lunar New Year, a celebration that marks the end of a lunar cycle and the beginning of a new year.

The Chinese Culture Center held a variety of dances and demonstrations to wow audience members and bring in the start of the Year of the Horse. The horse, which is in the element of fire for the first time in 60 years, symbolizes a period of energy and freedom while highlighting a year of dynamic action.

The events included several forms of Chinese martial arts, including sword arts and tai chi. Dances such as the "eating of the greens" lions dance, which symbolizes wealth and good fortune, were performed to a crowd who wanted to commemorate the new year.
