Police presence expected outside of UNMH for scheduled training
The University of New Mexico Hospital’s new critical care tower on Tuesday, Aug. 5. Construction is complete on the tower, which is set to open in the fall.
Passersby may see police activity in the area of University of New Mexico Hospital on Friday. Don’t worry, it’s “only a drill.”
In anticipation of the new UNM Hospital Critical Care Tower opening in October, an active shooter training is scheduled to take place.
“You may notice a visible police presence outside the Critical Care Tower, as well as hear related radio communications during the simulation. Please be assured — this is only a drill,” UNM Health System spokesperson Chris Ramirez wrote in an email Thursday.
The drill will take place from morning to early afternoon. It is not open to the public.
“These exercises help ensure all relevant staff are familiar with each floor’s layout, emergency exits, medical equipment, and other essential resources needed to protect the safety of our patients and employees,” Ramirez said.
Construction on the tower was completed earlier this month. It will add 24 intensive care beds, two operating rooms, a new emergency room, and MRI and CT scanners to the university’s hospital system.
