Police shoot homicide suspect during foot chase in Southwest Albuquerque

An officer shot and critically injured a man suspected in a homicide during a chase Thursday evening in Southwest Albuquerque.

Police Chief Harold Medina, at a news briefing at the scene, said no officers were injured, and the man shot was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

He said one officer fired at the man, who had pulled out a gun when police confronted him. Medina said he wasn’t sure if the man pointed or fired the weapon at officers.

Medina did not identify the man or say what homicide he was suspected in.

Around 6 p.m., officers with the Investigative Support Unit tried to arrest the man on a homicide warrant when he ran into an open field northwest of Sage and Unser SW.

Medina said the man pulled out a gun, and police continued to give chase, with one officer using a less-lethal 40mm round to try to stop the man.

“The individual was running towards an area with housing and civilians, armed with a firearm. At this point in time, there were shots fired,” Medina said.

The man was taken into custody and transported to a hospital, he said, adding, “What appears to be a firearm was recovered.”

The incident marked the third time Albuquerque police have shot someone in the past month.

In late February, officers shot and killed two men in separate incidents in the span of a week—one during a struggle over a gun and another who was armed and threatening suicide.
