Rep. Melanie Stansbury's sign sparks viral moment
President Donald Trump arrives to address a joint session of Congress on March 4 as U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-Albuquerque, holds a sign in protest.
When a Texas representative ripped Rep. Melanie Stansbury’s sign from her hands ahead of President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday night, he sparked a viral moment — one the New Mexico Republican Party and Stansbury are both capitalizing on.
The Democratic congresswoman for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District held a sign that read, “This is Not Normal,” as Trump entered the House chambers. Trump looked displeased as he passed. Then he greeted Rep. Lance Gooden, R-Texas, and gestured at Stansbury. Gooden can be seen on the C-SPAN broadcast taking Stansbury’s sign. The congresswoman remained stoic.
Stansbury responded to a social media post about her sign with a fundraising link.
Meanwhile, the New Mexico Republican Party sent an email Wednesday outlining the ways the party thinks Stansbury is “not normal,” with a request for donations to the party.
Stansbury’s office declined an interview request from the Journal, while Gooden’s did not immediately respond.
Gooden posted a video of the interaction on social media, saying “Putting the American people FIRST is normal,” and no one will disrespect Trump in front of him. While Stansbury stuck to her original message, posting, “Dismantling our government is not normal.”
