Roswell police fatally shoot man during foot chase

Published Modified

Roswell police say an officer fatally shot a man armed with a rifle during a foot chase on Thursday morning.

Todd Wildermuth, a Roswell police spokesman, said the 41-year-old man, whom he did not identify, died at the scene. He said no officers were injured.

Wildermuth said a Chaves County deputy is in the hospital after crashing into a semi-truck while responding to the shooting.

In a Facebook post, Chaves County Undersheriff Charles Yslas said the deputy was in the emergency room and "at this time, he is doing well."

Wildermuth said the incident began around 11:40 a.m. when an officer tried to pull over a man in a pickup truck hauling a trailer near South Sunset and West Brasher.

He said the man fled from the traffic stop and, at some point after, fled the truck on foot. Wildermuth said the man was carrying a rifle and was shot by a Roswell officer.

"After being shot, the suspect received first-aid from RPD officers, but soon after was pronounced deceased at the scene," he said.

Wildermuth said the New Mexico State Police are investigating what led to the shooting.

No other details have been released.
