State Police release names of family killed in Saturday's quadruple homicide
New Mexico State Police are still looking for answers after a teenager allegedly fatally shot his family at their Valencia County home early Saturday morning.
Diego Leyva, 16, was charged with four counts of open murder in the shooting deaths of his father, Leonardo Leyva, 42; mother, Adriana Bencomo, 35; and brothers Adrian Leyva, 17, and Alexander Leyva, 14, New Mexico State Police spokesperson Ray Wilson said.
At about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, Diego Leyva called 911 and told a dispatcher that “he had killed his family” at a home on Camino Escondido, southeast of Rio Communities, Wilson said. When Valencia County deputies arrived, Leyva walked out of the home “with his hands in the air and was extremely intoxicated.” A handgun was later found on the kitchen table, Wilson said.
The teenager was was taken to a hospital “for detox.” He was released from a local hospital early Sunday morning and has been booked at the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center, Wilson said.
“This incident is in the preliminary stages of investigation,” Wilson said. “New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents and Crime Scene Team are processing the scene and conducting interviews to learn what led up to these tragic events. Once the investigation is complete, it will be presented to the district attorney’s office for prosecution.”
Correction: The story has been updated to reflect that Adrian Leyta was 17 years old and not Diego's twin brother.
