Metro Judge Reprimanded
The Associated Press
SANTA FE The state Supreme Court has reprimanded Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court Judge J. Wayne Griego for a 2005 incident in which he directed his secretary to sign off on traffic case plea agreements because he was delayed returning to Albuquerque from a vacation.
The court issued the formal reprimand Wednesday. It will be published in the state Bar Bulletin.
The reprimand is part of an agreement for disciplinary action that was reached between the Judicial Standards Commission and the judge.
In approving that agreement in February, the Supreme Court ordered Griego to pay a $500 fine. He also was placed on supervised probation and into a mentorship with another judge.
Griego's probation continues through late August, Jim Noel, executive director of the commission, said Thursday.
Griego has apologized for his conduct. He was late returning from a trip to Las Vegas in April 2005. He called his secretary and told her to use a rubber stamp with his signature to handle more than 100 plea agreements in traffic cases.
