Blue-Footed Booby Sighting Confirmed at Conchas Lake
CONCHAS LAKE STATE PARK Bird-watchers are flocking to Conchas Lake State Park near Tucumcari after the first confirmed sighting of a blue-footed booby in New Mexico.
The blue-footed booby is a large ocean bird with distinctive blue feet. It was first reported at the lake Aug. 15.
State Parks officials say bird-watchers have traveled from Oklahoma, Colorado and across New Mexico to see it.
The bird is commonly found 1,000 miles away in the Gulf of California between mainland Mexico and Baja California.
So why did it make the long trip?
State Parks instructional coordinator Rob Yaksich calls it a "million dollar question." He says it's possible the birds have visited other New Mexico lakes without being noticed.
