Former Lt. Gov. Mike Runnels Disciplined by Court
SANTA FE The state Supreme Court has suspended former Lt. Gov. Mike Runnels of Ruidoso from the practice of law for misconduct.
The court on Wednesday unanimously ordered Runnels to be indefinitely suspended, with that lasting at least a year, and to serve 100 hours of community service before he can seek reinstatement as a lawyer. He must pay restitution of $2,000 and reimburse his client for about $3,100 in legal fees.
Runnels served as lieutenant governor under Democrat Toney Anaya from 1983-1986. He is a former district attorney for the 13th Judicial District, which includes Valencia, Sandoval and Cibola counties.
In a letter to the court in June, Runnels said he "failed in his professional responsibilities" but did not intentionally mislead his client.
