Today at the Roundhouse, March 4
The end of the 60-day legislative session is in sight, with less than three weeks remaining before the March 22 adjournment date. Here are some bills to keep an eye out for on Tuesday, March 4.
Veterans’ property tax rates: After passing the House without a single no vote, a bill expanding an existing property tax exemption for veterans could get its first Senate hearing in the Senate Tax, Business and Transportation Committee. The bill, House Bill 47, comes after New Mexico voters approved a pair of constitutional amendments in November paving the way for the change in law.
Solitary confinement: A bill that would increase the minimum age an inmate can be placed in solitary confinement from 18 to 21 is scheduled to get its first hearing in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee. The measure, House Bill 533, would also set a maximum age of 55 for prisoners to be placed in solitary confinement.
Feeling the connection: It’s officially broadband day at the Legislature, and the New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion will hold an event in the Capitol rotunda highlighting $20 million in recent grants awarded to schools and tribes in New Mexico.
