Looking to stay on top of what’s happening at the Legislature? Here are three things to watch for on Thursday, Jan. 30:

Congressional visits: Two members of New Mexico’s all-Democratic congressional delegation are scheduled to address legislators.

U.S. Reps. Melanie Stansbury and Gabe Vasquez will both speak to a joint session of the Legislature. The joint session is scheduled to begin shortly after 11:30 a.m. in the House chambers.

Vasquez and Stansbury, who is a former state representative, both won re-election to new two-year terms in November’s general election.

Public safety and crime: Criminal penalty legislation lines the schedule of the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee’s 1:30 p.m. meeting.

The committee has on its list measures proposing to increase the penalty for a shooting threat to a fourth-degree felony; make unlawful possession of a weapon conversion device a third-degree felony; limit access to firearms among people who commit certain juvenile offenses; and specify felony penalties for vehicle thefts.

Environment: Senate Conservation is continuing on its list of climate- and environmental-related bills this morning. Its 8:30 a.m. early start will kick off with water pollution bills. A bill to increase oil and gas royalty rates is also on the agenda.
