Today at the Roundhouse

Published Modified

Looking to stay on top of what’s happening at the Legislature? Here are four things to watch for on Wednesday, Jan. 29:

Behavioral health: Three bills aimed at expanding New Mexico’s mental health and drug abuse treatment system are on tap in the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee, which meets at 1:30 p.m.

The proposals, Senate Bills 1, 2 and 3, would establish a new $1 billion behavioral health trust fund and mandate regional implementation plans.

Health care: The House Health and Human Services Committee, which meets at 9 a.m., will dive into bills dealing with Medicaid.

One of the measures, House Bill 42, would provide rate increases to service providers receiving Medicaid reimbursements, while another bill, House Bill 55, would increase the Medicaid reimbursement rate for personal care service provider agencies.

Education: The Senate Education Committee has a hefty agenda for its 9 a.m. meeting, including an anti-hazing bill and changes to university regents’ training requirements.

The committee could also take up a bill incentivizing schools to ban cellphones in classrooms, a proposal that Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed support for last week.

Everyone is a Lobo: It’s officially University of New Mexico Day, with events and booths at the Roundhouse almost all day and an invite-only alumni dinner in the evening.
