Today at the Roundhouse

Looking to stay on top of what’s happening at the Legislature? Here are three things to watch for Tuesday, Jan. 28:

Environment: The Senate Conservation Committee will debate Senate Bill 4, which would codify greenhouse gas emissions limits for future years.

Specifically, the Clear Horizons and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Act would gradually reduce allowable methane emissions for the oil and natural gas industries, which could impact future state tax collections.

Public safety: Several public safety bills are on tap in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee, which meets at 1:30 p.m.

Bills on the committee’s agenda include House Bill 12, which proposes changes to the state’s “red flag” gun law that allows firearms to be temporarily seized from individuals deemed to pose a danger to themselves or others.

House Bill 4, a competency bill dealing with how New Mexico courts handle individuals with mental illness, is also on the committee’s docket.

Special events: The New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops will hold its annual invitation-only prayer breakfast. It’s also Primary Care Day at the Capitol, and the New Mexico Primary Care Association will hold an event in the rotunda from 8 a.m. until noon.

All of the committee hearing and floor sessions are livestreamed on the Legislature’s website, which can be found at www.nmlegis.gov/
