A city of Albuquerque Solid Waste Management employee ran over an unhoused man who climbed out of a garbage truck’s compactor early Friday morning.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released.

Alex Bukoski, a city of Albuquerque spokesman, said around 6:15 a.m. the employee in a trash truck was emptying a dumpster at the Alvarado Transportation Center in Downtown.

He said after the bin was emptied, a man climbed out of the trash compactor compartment of the truck.

“The individual, an adult male, slipped and fell under the vehicle,” Bukoski said.

It is unclear how the man ended up in the trash compactor of the truck.

“The Solid Waste Management Department is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the victim in this incident,” Bukoski said. “Members of the Solid Waste Management safety team are working with (the Albuquerque Police Department) as they continue to investigate.”
