UNM to begin search for new provost
Candidate expected to be selected in May after university president is chosen
The University of New Mexico has begun the search for its new provost and executive vice president of academic affairs, the university’s chief academic officer.
UNM officials announced Monday they would conduct a nationwide search to replace James Paul Holloway, who left the university in July after six years to become president of the University of Toledo in Ohio.
Barbara Rodriguez, senior vice president for academic affairs, has been serving in Holloway’s position in the interim.
To help conduct its search, UNM is employing Isaacson Miller, a recruitment firm for executives in higher education.
The search will take place over the coming months. In February, UNM President Garnett Stokes — who will be retiring herself in July — will appoint a provost search committee, which will conduct interviews throughout March and April. Katie Witkiewitz, a distinguished professor of psychology and director of the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addictions, will lead the committee, university officials said.
The new university president will be selected in May and will help select the new provost shortly thereafter that same month, according to UNM spokesperson Ben Cloutier.
UNM held a closed meeting of its presidential search committee on Tuesday.
“This search is an opportunity to find a dynamic academic leader who understands the breadth and complexity of UNM’s mission and who will partner with faculty, staff and students to advance academic excellence across the university,” Stokes said in a statement.
The public may provide feedback on the new provost selection via the university’s website.
