Warm days on tap for the weekend
A rainbow appears over Rio Rancho on Friday.
Couples celebrating a belated Valentine’s Day this weekend can rest easy knowing the weather will be warm and mostly sunny, as long as they aren’t celebrating up high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Saturday morning will start with cloudy skies that will clear up throughout the day, according to Troy Marshall, meteorologist technician with the National Weather Service in Albuquerque.
On Sunday, expect temperatures in the mid to high 50s and partly cloudy skies before a sharp drop in the evening, with temperatures in the upper 20s around the Albuquerque area.
An avalanche warning was issued early Friday in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness and Columbine-Hondo Wilderness areas above 9,000 feet.
“Human triggered and natural avalanches are very likely and avalanches large enough to bury or injure a person are expected,” Marshall said. “Stay off of and beneath slopes steeper than 30 degrees.”
The warning did not include ski areas where avalanche reduction measures are performed, according to the National Weather Service.
