Woman pleads to felony for role in gunfight at UNM involving NMSU basketball player

A woman pleaded guilty last week to aggravated battery with great bodily harm for her role in a deadly shooting on the University of New Mexico campus in November, the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office confirmed Tuesday.

Mya Hill, 18, entered the plea Monday in the 2nd Judicial District Children’s Court and was sentenced to probation until the age of 21.

Police say Hill helped lure Mike Peake, a New Mexico State University basketball player, to the UNM campus where he was attacked by three men.

The confrontation led to a gunfight that killed 19-year-old UNM freshman Brandon Travis and injured Peake, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court. Peake has not been charged.

Police said a group of UNM freshmen, including Hill, Travis and Jonathan Smith, 19, hatched a plan to lure Peake to the campus to get revenge for a beating during a fight at the Lobos-Aggies football game in Las Cruces in October.

Smith pleaded guilty in January to aggravated battery and tampering with evidence for his role in the plan. Because Smith and Hill were charged as juveniles, their plea agreements and other court records are sealed and unavailable for public inspection.

When Peake arrived, the group confronted him and Travis fired several gunshots at Peake, striking him in the leg, according to the complaint.

Peake returned fire, killing Travis, it said. Neither Smith nor Hill fired a gun during the shootings, police said.

Smith was arrested Nov. 21 and was allowed to live with his mother in Plano, Texas, according to conditions of his release. Hill also was arrested in November.
