How to submit a letter to the editor, an op-ed column or a speakup blurb

Published Modified

The Albuquerque Journal wants to hear from you, either through a letter to the editor, a Speakup or an op-ed. Preference is given to opinions submitted via our website forms rather than by email or snail mail.

Letter to the editor

Letters to the editor should be limited to 300 words. These require a real name, phone number and a city where you live to be considered for publication in the state’s Leading News Source.

A person will call to verify you submitted the letter before it can be considered and possibly printed. Telephone numbers will not be published.

The purpose of letters to the editor is to give readers the opportunity to comment on the content in the paper and issues in the community. Letters to the Journal are read by decision makers, city councilors and legislators. The Journal believes there is value in providing readers with a voice.

The Journal receives hundreds of letters and op-ed submissions a month and can only publish a limited number. Though the Journal buys ink by the barrel and newsprint by the trainload, it is expensive to create a printed newspaper. The letters will be fact-checked and edited before publication as well.

All of these forms are available on our website at ABQjournal.com/opinion.

Op-ed columns

If you have more to say and are an expert in a particular subject, please use our op-ed form .

There is a 600-word maximum for op-ed columns.

Op-ed columnists provide a wide array of perspectives on various issues affecting New Mexicans. Authors are asked not to submit more than one every 90 days.

Speakup!

Use the Speakup form to submit a SpeakUp!

SpeakUp guidelines: If you want to gripe, grouse, whine or bellyache about a generic topic, submit your opinion in the form below. The same goes if you want to dish out praise or thanks. Either way, you have to do it in 50 words or fewer. You can’t identify anyone you criticize. Keep it clean. No cursing, please. We don’t need your name, just initials. And it’s cheaper than therapy.

If you want to ensure your opinion is heard, consider purchasing a full-page advertisement. Contact Wayne Barnard for more information at 505-823-3301. This way you can schedule when and where your opinion is published while following certain guidelines.
