Years ago, when I was a newly minted attorney shopping for some discount professional attire, I overheard some advice I will never forget. As I browsed an array of handbags, I could hear a conversation between a mother and daughter one aisle over.

The daughter, whom I estimated to be late elementary school-aged, was complaining to her mother about unjust treatment she had received from her older sister. The exact details of the older sister’s slight escape me — perhaps not abiding by the rules when the younger sister had righteously called “shotgun” for the ride to the store or unfairly pushing in front of her in some kind of line — anyone with a big sister can fill in the blanks about the type of tyranny the girl was describing.
