OPINION: Political jab puts down crucial business
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, recently criticized President Donald Trump by saying he “sounded like a used car salesman” who was “selling nothing but lemons.” While clearly intended as a political jab, this language relies on a stereotype that unfairly reflects on thousands of hardworking used car dealers in New Mexico and across the country.
As executive director of the New Mexico Automotive Industry Alliance and a former independent automobile dealer, it is important to push back on this characterization and explain what our businesses actually do.
Used car dealers in New Mexico are overwhelmingly local, family-run enterprises that sponsor youth sports, support school fundraisers and participate in chambers of commerce and civic life. Their businesses are licensed, bonded, insured and highly regulated, operating under strict state and federal requirements governing titling, disclosures, advertising and consumer protections. Many also provide service contracts and stand behind their customers when issues arise — hardly the behavior implied by common caricatures.
Most importantly, used car dealers provide access to reliable transportation. In a state where public transit is limited, a vehicle is often the only way to get to work, attend medical appointments, buy groceries and ensure children can participate in school and activities. Dealers help neighbors with limited budgets or imperfect credit find safe, affordable transportation so they can fully participate in daily life.
Bad actors exist in every industry, and our alliance supports strong enforcement to address them. But it is inaccurate and unfair to equate an entire, highly regulated profession with dishonesty. Instead of leaning on stereotypes, public figures should recognize that most used car dealers are exactly what we want more of: Small businesses that follow the rules, invest locally and serve their communities.
That is a reality worth recognizing — regardless of politics.
