OPINION: See lights, and give back
This holiday season, thousands of Albuquerque families are using the Albuquerque Area Holiday Lights Tour MAP Facebook page to do more than just find festive light displays — they are using it as a way to give back to their community. What started as a simple way to share favorite holiday houses has grown into a platform for supporting local food pantries and helping neighbors facing food insecurity.
Members of the group can find an up-to-date map of homes and neighborhoods with holiday lights, along with information about which stops are also collecting non-perishable food items. By turning a family drive to see lights into an opportunity to drop off canned goods or other shelf-stable foods, our community is transforming a beloved tradition into concrete support for those who need it most.
Anyone can join the effort by visiting the Albuquerque Area Holiday Lights Tour MAP Facebook group and requesting to join. Once in the group, people can access the map, learn where donations are being accepted, and share their own displays or collection sites. In a season that can be difficult for many, this page is proof that when Albuquerque comes together, we can make the holidays brighter in every sense of the word.
