OPINION: Trade unions help New Mexico grow
New Mexico is experiencing a period of rapid economic growth with new industries expanding across the state — from advanced manufacturing and computing centers to space, energy and high-tech research. This growth brings opportunity, but it also raises important questions about energy, infrastructure and the future of working families.
As a member of the building trades, I want to be clear: these are not Republican jobs or Democratic jobs. These are construction jobs that feed our families and support entire communities. Trade unions have built New Mexico’s infrastructure for generations, and we will be the ones building what comes next.
Economic development must be balanced with environmental and public health protections. Union members want clean air, clean water and safe communities just like everyone else — we live here too. But growth also requires reliable energy. Data centers, manufacturing plants, hospitals and national security facilities cannot operate on intermittent power alone.
New Mexico has a unique advantage that should be part of this conversation: We are a national leader in nuclear science and technology. Modern nuclear energy is a clean, carbon-free source of reliable base-load power that can meet rising demand without increasing air pollution. Combined with investments in renewable energy and improved efficiency, nuclear technology can help ensure both environmental responsibility and energy reliability.
Trade unions are not obstacles to progress — we are partners in it. Union labor delivers skilled craftsmanship, safety, accountability and training through apprenticeship programs that prepare the next generation of New Mexico workers. When energy and infrastructure projects are done right, they create long-term careers, not temporary jobs.
New Mexico’s future depends on thoughtful, balanced policies that recognize the connection between economic growth, clean energy and working families. If we invest wisely and include trade unions in the solution, New Mexico can grow responsibly while ensuring prosperity and stability for the people who build this state.
