SpeakUp!: Readers respond to governor's gun action
MLG’s gun suspension is the most EGREGIOUS ACTION by a political figure in the history of this great state, or even the country. They put people in jail for Jan. 6, which is no different than this. Punishing the good citizens and giving the criminal free range — impeachable offenses. DO
The governor suspends right to carry firearms in public in Albuquerque. I’m sure the criminals with their ILLEGAL GUNS will obey. DS
Gov. Lujan Grisham, do you really think that criminals are going to leave their guns at home because you said so? Now I have NO DEFENSE from them. BP
Shaun Willoughby, of the Albuquerque Police Officers’ Association, in response to MLG’s FIREARMS BAN, said, “There are countless ways the governor could address this crisis that would be impactful and meaningful.” So let’s hear some of these ways … Mr. Willoughby. RS
Criminal actions deserve criminal punishment. Gov. Lujan Grisham should be impeached, convicted and REMOVED FROM OFFICE for violating both the state and federal constitutions. Then she should be prosecuted, convicted and punished under the new law for violating the civil rights of all Bernalillo County residents. LRS
NO COMMENT from our entire congressional delegation on the assault on our Second Amendment rights by MLG. They must be OK with it. Thanks, Democrats. BJ
Make New Mexico Great Again. IMPEACH Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. DE
Gov. MLG with her latest edict suspending gun-carrying only proves she’s a willing stooge of the deep state using New Mexico as a testing ground for challenging and maybe eventually ABOLISHING our Second Amendment rights. This is who you Dems voted in — the cartels must be smiling. DD
Time has long passed since the amendments were written in 1791. We demand technology, great medicine, and SPACE TRAVEL. The government has made little progress. Amendments need to be updated. We have gender and racial inequality. Our government needs to catch up to 2023. We have a new playing field. DF
What MLG did was right. She brought an issue to the forefront. It’s our legislators (who) have failed us. We need laws — like if you use a gun in any crime, no bail, triple the sentence and if a minor, your parents will be in jail with you, period. I haven’t seen anything out of the naysayers on how to solve the problem except FINGER-POINTING. JS
When, oh when, will the Democratic Party achieve sufficient IQ to comprehend that eliminating ownership and access to firearms from everyone EXCEPT CRIMINALS will not make us all safer? KH
Now I know why we have the Bill of Rights, especially the Second Amendment. TYRANNY cannot succeed if the citizens are armed. That’s why suspending the Second Amendment was the governor’s first step. … CH
So the governor will call a special session for legalizing marijuana but not not for crime or education crises. Then she passes this UNCONSTITUTIONAL firearms ban. I have an idea that would impact violent crime and drug traffic: Close the border. JL
Is this state run by IQ-challenged people? What genius advised our governor to commit the INANE ACT of banning guns of respectable citizens? The 11-year-old boy was not shot by a law-abiding citizen. This has nothing to do with gun ownership. Heaven protect us from politicians. LT
It should be no surprise that our governor decided that she is above the Constitution. Just look at what she did during COVID. She thinks she is almighty God ABOVE EVERYONE ELSE. KP
Remember back in 2020 when the government told us, “Two weeks to slow the spread?” That turned into nearly three years of restrictions. “30-day gun ban” is just where it starts on this latest unconstitutional ABUSE OF POWER. NM GOP, get off your butts and do something. AN
MLG should issue an “emergency health order” to block and ban FENTANYL, meth, oxy and heroin by closing the border, rather than denying hard-working taxpayers the ability to defend themselves from the criminals ... . SS
MLG’s firearms ban — let’s do the same thing with our DWI problem: ban all driving for 30 days. By extrapolation, that’ll fix the DWI problem too. C’mon, governor, punishing everyone because of a few? I hope those who voted for you are paying attention. RONCHETTI would’ve never tried this. JK
The people in the city, county and state responsible for the EPIDEMIC of gun violence are not the people who are licensed to carry concealed weapons. They should have been exempt from this executive order along with the police and security. That would have made more sense than this. MO
The bigger picture with Gov. Lujan Grisham’s unconstitutional ban of guns is the public health emergency powers that have been granted to her. That kind of power in a FANATIC‘s hands is very dangerous. Even worse is the refusal of her party to remove that power from her. Shame on them. GH
I recall about 37 crime bills were introduced in the legislative session by Republicans, and NONE even made it to committee. MLG should be going after the soft-on-crime legislators, not law-abiding citizens. Oops, got that backward. She isn’t going after crime, she is going after votes, not criminals. My bad. LS
Instead of banning guns, why not promote law-abiding citizens to conceal carry a weapon? This way, criminals will be put on notice that if they rob someone there is a good chance a citizen may lawfully PROTECT THEMSELVES and the criminal may get hurt in their criminal efforts. Just a thought. TK
MLG has taken away our Second Amendment rights to BEAR ARMS citing an “emergency” — what emergency? She’s in breach of the Constitution. Why hasn’t she been arrested? Where are the lawyers standing up for NM rights? HT
Here MLG goes again! Firearms ban. Did the cartel or thugs of ABQ get the memo? “... while we figure it out?” Blue govs can figure it out quickly. Have DAs PROSECUTE criminals, then jail. Period. Not punish taxpaying citizens. Glad MLG is going, going, gone. Legal challenge, you bet. LLB
MLG’s order is nothing but A BAD JOKE. If she seriously wanted to do something about gun violence, the Democrats who run this state would model our laws after the federal laws, which have real consequences. Instead, every major crime bill gets tabled and we have catch and release. RPC
If MLG really believes that taking away the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens will reduce crime in Albuquerque, she is delusional. Criminals will continue to carry guns and commit crimes. A first step in solving our crime problem is to KEEP CRIMINALS IN JAIL. Stop catch and release. RK
One should ask where our governor is coming from, or perhaps what she is smoking. Her new “health“ order is the banning of the constitutional right TO BEAR ARMS. Yet she has helped this state become the abortion capital of the country. … TF
Ooooo! Now you’ve done it. All you law-abiding criminals out there have pissed off the governor so bad you can’t carry your ILLEGAL FIREARMS anymore. Imagine your embarrassment when you get caught with your gat. Firm hand-slap for you. PJ
The new “health order” is A JOKE looking for a laugh. “The governor says she doesn’t expect criminals to follow the order.” What? Then why is she punishing law-abiding citizens and further putting their lives in danger? JEH
WHAT IN THE WORLD? The governor assumes the authority to take away law-abiding citizens’ constitutional right to carry arms for self-protection, while acknowledging that she doesn’t expect criminals to comply. Where concealed carry is widespread, crime goes down. Guess what we can expect in New Mexico. God help us. DE
The governor just doesn’t get it. She apparently thinks guns are the problem. I hate to burst your bubble, gov, but guns are not the problem. It’s the people BEHIND THE GUNS that are the problem. Until that issue is addressed, nothing will change. AGH
It used to be the criminals were locked up. Now it is becoming law-abiding citizens locked up. Bars on our windows and doors, locks on our steering wheels. Locks on our credit cards, etc. to avoid hackers. Locked up hygiene and cleaning items in stores but not for liquor. DD
The criminals/bad guys/felons/thugs/illegals/crappy judges/no prosecution/no bail/no leadership are the problem. NOT the Guns. PB
Gov. MLG’s emergency order banning guns is UNCONSTITUTIONAL and she knows it. It will now cost the state money in trying to defend it. Why do it? Because she has done other rash orders and has gotten away with some — and she loves the publicity. KJ
I am writing to express my support for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s courageous initiative toward putting a halt to gun violence in Albuquerque. I also want to express my disappointment in our city leaders — Mayor Tim Keller and APD Police Chief Harold Medina for defying the governor’s 30-day gun ban in public... OV
