New Mexico Tech Signs Contract for Telescope
The Associated Press
SOCORRO New Mexico Tech has signed a $4.5 million contract for an Arizona-based company to build a telescope at its planned Magdalena Ridge Observatory.
The Socorro-based university wants EOS Technologies of Tucson to build a 2.4-meter optical telescope for the astronomical research facility that will be atop the Magdalena Mountains.
EOS, which specializes in large optical telescopes and optical systems, will use a telescope mirror that was originally designed as one of three prototypes built for NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.
Once completed, the observatory will include the 2.4-meter telescope and an electronically linked array of smaller optical and infrared telescopes.
