Community solar offers cost savings, renewable energy benefits without need for panels
“Going solar” has for years implied the need for people to pay for solar panel installation on their home or business to access the sun’s clean energy for power. Now, as a result of the State of New Mexico’s Community Solar Act, qualified small businesses, nonprofits and households can not only gain access to solar energy but also save money on utility bills - all without solar panels - through a new community solar program.
Community solar programs allow for equal access to the economic and environmental benefits of solar energy generation regardless of the physical attributes or ownership of an individual’s home or business. Anyone interested can sign up for a limited number of subscriptions to power generated by solar arrays being built in New Mexico.
New Mexico Sustainable Business, a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting sustainable business practices, has partnered with a company called Solstice to bring this community solar program to the broader Albuquerque community, to educate potential subscribers, and to help enroll local businesses and households in monthly savings.
Here’s how it works: You reserve a share, or portion, of an upcoming local solar farm at no charge. When the solar array is complete, the power will be produced on your behalf, offsetting your monthly energy consumption and provided at a discount. Credits from that renewable energy usage will appear on the bill from your existing utility provider - PNM, El Paso Electric, or Xcel Energy (SPS).
Small businesses across Albuquerque qualify for a 10% discount on solar credits, while income-qualified households can get a discount as high as 28%.
More than 10,000 New Mexicans have enrolled since the program launched this spring, looking forward to saving a combined $1 million+ every year on their electric bills while supporting local energy, jobs, and a healthier environment.
