It is the state meet – only without the title.

Saturday’s Albuquerque Academy Cross Country Extravaganza is a most serious dress rehearsal for next month’s state meet.

Over 1,300 athletes from 101 teams are converging at Academy for the Extravaganza, which is to be conducted over the same course as the state meet, which is scheduled on Nov. 8.

The dirt course covers 3 miles around the Academy campus. Only the final 350 meters, which are contested on the school’s track, are not dirt.

The meet will be a showcase for all of the state’s top runners.

The headliner, as always, is Eldorado sophomore Gianna Rahmer, who is in the final race of the day, the Class 5A girls competition, at 2:40 p.m. That is preceded by the 5A boys at 2 p.m.

The Class 1A-2A boys are first, at 9 a.m., with the girls at 9:40 a.m.

The 4A boys are set for a 10:40 a.m. start, with the 4A girls at 11:20 a.m.

The 3A boys start at 12:20 p.m., then the girls at 1 p.m.

There is no admission to the meet, and also no dogs allowed.
