1A boys and girls roundup: Legacy Academy, Evangel Christian/Oak Grove fall in quarterfinals

Upset-minded Legacy Academy jumped out to an early lead over second-seeded Fort Sumner/House on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A boys tournament.

The seventh-seeded Silverbacks were ahead 19-14 after the first quarter. Legacy Academy still had 19 points at halftime, however, after getting blanked in the second quarter.

The Foxes scored 18 unanswered, which included a 16-0 second quarter, to grab a lead they would not relinquish, eventually winning 65-46 at Bernalillo High School.

Tra’von Bonds scored 22 to pace Fort Sumner/House (22-5). Dallas Baca, Jaevion Scales and Bryant Scales each scored nine points to lead Legacy Academy (24-7).

Here’s the rest of the action from Bernalillo High School, which was host to the 1A girls and boys quarterfinals:

Class 1A boys

NO. 1 MAGDALENA, 58, NO. 9 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY/OAK GROVE CLASSICAL ACADEMY 48: Three Steers scored in double figures — Joseph Zamora with 17, Lanbrent Ganadonegro with 14 and Jeffrey Stuteville with 12 — to lead Magdalena (29-1). The Eagles (19-12) played six players total and were paced by TA Benavidez with 23 points.

NO. 6 CIMARRON 63, NO. 3 DES MOINES 50: The Rams (24-7) dominated on the boards, recording a 42-17 advantage in rebounding. Cimarron’s Demetrious Jackson hauled in a game-high 16 rebounds and added 14 points. Caleb Sumpter scored 25 to pace the Demons (25-4).

NO. 5 LOGAN 50, NO. 4 MELROSE 43: The Longhorns never trailed and overcame a big turnover deficit to upset the Buffaloes. Melrose forced 20 turnovers and only turned the ball over 11 times but was able to overcome a 31 percent shooting night.

Kaedon Stoner scored 15 to pace Logan (25-5). The Buffaloes (24-5) were led by Chase Brittenum with 14 points.

Class 1A girls

NO. 1 ROY/MOSQUERO 55, NO. 9 CORONA/VAUGHN 19: The Lady Blue pestered the Cardinals into 47 turnovers in a wire-to-wire win. Sylviana Baca led all scorers with 16 points for Roy/Mosquero (25-1). Corona/Vaughn’s (20-4) 6-foot-6 freshman Harper Dunn recorded nine points, nine blocks, 14 rebounds and 12 turnovers.

NO. 2 CLIFF 48, NO. 10 DORA 37: Neysa Gutierrez poured in 30 points to lead the Cowgirls (27-2). Gutierrez hit 7 of 15 from the field, including 3 of 5 three-pointers and drained 13 of 15 from the free throw line.

Justice Deason scored 12 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for the Coyotes (19-8).

NO. 3 LOGAN 50, NO. 6 JEMEZ VALLEY 43: Desta Rose scored 24 points and Lizzy horner chipped in 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Longhorns (22-7). Kaylena Chinana tallied 25, the only player in double figures for the Warriors (25-5).

NO. 4 FORT SUMNER/HOUSE 42, NO. 5 MAGDALENA 41: The Vixens (21-7) rallied in the fourth quarter to edge the Steers (22-8). Emmarie Casaus and Alyssa Casaus scored 13 apiece for Fort Sumner/House. Jorianne Mirabal paced Magdalena with 21 points.
