New Lobo holds his own in exhibition against Kentucky Wildcats

Nelly Junior Joseph, the New Mexico Lobos' 6-foot-10 men's basketball transfer center from Iona, held his own Saturday against the Kentucky Wildcats in an international exhibition tournament being played in Toronto.

Playing for the Basketball Africa League select team in the four-team GLOBL Jam tournament in Toronto, the native of Benin City, Nigeria scored 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor and was 6-of-8 from the free throw line to go along with nine rebounds and two steals.

Africa lost to Kentucky/Team U.S.A. 104-92.

The event is for teams with rosters comprised of players under 23 years old and featured the team from Africa, Kentucky representing the United States a team from Germany and the host Team Canada, which also features several Division I college players.

Junior Joseph did not compete in the first two games of the event because of travel delays. Saturday was his debut and he played 34 minutes.

Africa will play in the bronze medal game Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against either Germany or Canada.
