Playoff upset gives United another home match
NM United fans celebrate United’s win against San Antonio FC at Isotopes Park on Saturday.
New Mexico United's playoff road got considerably shorter late Sunday night — at least in terms of mileage.
United, the USL Championship Western Conference's No. 3 seed, will host a conference semifinal Saturday against No. 7 Orange County SC at Isotopes Park. Orange County advanced by upsetting No. 2 Sacramento Republic FC (5-4 in penalties after a 0-0 draw), allowing NMU to stay home this week instead of traveling to Northern California.
United, which defeated San Antonio FC 2-0 on Saturday, was the only team to score multiple goals in a wild playoff weekend. Louisville and Charleston, the top two Eastern Conference and overall seeds, both lost along with Sacramento and Western Conference No. 4 seed El Paso.
As a result, Western Conference top seed Tulsa is in line to play at home for as long as the Scissortails last in the playoffs. If New Mexico and Tulsa both win this week, NMU would travel to Oklahoma for the Western Conference final and that winner would host the USLC championship match.
Saturday's NMU-Orange County matchup is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at newmexicoutd.com.
