Prep football: Week 7 games to watch and expert picks
Games to watch
1. Rio Rancho at Cibola, Nusenda Community Stadium, 7 p.m. Friday: For the first time, I think, we’ll have a true sense of how legitimate Cibola’s 4-1 start is, as the Cougars take on the Rams in a District 1-6A opener. Rio Rancho is almost certainly the best team Cibola has played to date this season.
2. La Cueva at Eldorado, Wilson Stadium, 7 p.m.: This remains Albuquerque’s best prep football rivalry game, and, as is often the case, it has ramifications for both. This District 2-6A contest will feature a Bears team starting to heat up, with three wins in a row.
3. Roswell at Gadsden, 7 p.m. Friday: The Panthers’ last home game didn’t go as planned, with Artesia putting up 35 points in the first half. Let’s see how Gadsden responds in this home game against Class 5A’s second-ranked Coyotes. Gadsden is rated No. 4.
4. Eunice at Loving, 7 p.m. Friday: The Cardinals are coming off their first loss, a lopsided one at St. Michael’s, and this matchup is a District 3-2A opener. This district is absolutely loaded with terrific playoff contenders — Eunice is ranked No. 2 in 2A, the Falcons No. 5 — and all these schools are going to be fighting hard for prime territory in the 3-2A standings.
5. Valencia at Chaparral, 7 p.m. Friday: The Lobos (4-1 going into their Friday night home game versus Manzano) make an extremely rare appearance in our Games of the Week feature, but they’ve earned the mention. Chaparral’s offense has been humming along nicely the last few weeks, and this is a key district matchup for both.
