Prep Notes: All-State and All-American ball players
West Las Vegas’ Malie Satete, who set the state record for home runs in a season in 2023-24 as an eighth-grader, has been named to the MaxPreps All-American second team.
New Mexico high school athletes from all over the state have been receiving recognition and accolades recently.
ALL-AMERICANS: West Las Vegas’ outstanding slugger, Malie Satete, has been named to the MaxPreps All-American second team. The freshman, who already is New Mexico’s single-season record holder for home runs (24 in 2024), belted 23 more homers as a freshman and batted just over .700 for the Dons.
But the MaxPreps accolades don’t end there for Satete, who already in two varsity seasons has tied the state’s career mark for home runs (47).
On Tuesday, Satete, defined as a utility player, was announced as one of the first-team picks on the MaxPreps Underclass All-America team.
Centennial pitcher Destiny Perez also made the All-American second team for MaxPreps; she batted almost .600 and went 22-0 for the state champion Hawks. She has signed with New Mexico State.
ALL-STATE BASEBALL: The New Mexico High School Coaches Association has released the 2025 All-State lists.
Cleveland’s outfielder/infielder, University of Oklahoma-bound Anthony Del Angel, was named the Class 5A Player of the Year following his junior season with the Storm.
Marc Hilton, who has now taken two schools to a state championship — St. Pius and, this year, Sandia — was chosen the 5A Coach of the Year.
First-team pitchers from the metro area were La Cueva’s Dylan Blomker (who is committed to LSU), plus Rio Rancho’s Brandon Segal, Sandia’s Adriel Figueroa-Brito and Los Lunas’ Matthew Castillo.
Del Angel was one of four metro-area infielders named to the first team, which was not broken down by individual position. Also on the first team were Figueroa-Brito (who played shortstop for the Matadors), plus La Cueva second baseman Reid Jacobson and Los Lunas’ Jasiah Byers.
Los Lunas’ JJ Utash, La Cueva’s Brayden Likar, Sandia’s Jeremiah Bustillos and Eldorado’s Tim Kamphuis were chosen as first-team outfielders.
Noah Massey of Volcano Vista was 5A’s first-team catcher. Sandia’s Colton Floyd was the first-team utility player. Braiden Reynolds of La Cueva was the first-team designated hitter.
In Class 4A, Albuquerque Academy’s senior right-handed ace pitcher, Matt Delaney, was the POY and also one of the first-team pitchers. Hope Christian’s Jacob Gergen also was a first-team pick on the mound.
On the infield, Delaney, Bernalillo’s Uriel Castro and St. Pius’ Jacob Madrid were named to the 4A first team. Nolan Garcia from Hope was in the outfield, and St. Pius’ Joaquin Arago was the first-team DH.
Isaac Ruth of Oak Grove Classical Academy was on the 2A first team as an infielder.
CHANGE IN LOS LUNAS: Paul Cieremans helped steer Los Lunas baseball to its best baseball finish in over two decades, as the Tigers reached the Class 5A semifinals in May.
But the Tigers will have a new head coach starting next season. Cieremans accepted a position as an assistant principal at Los Lunas.
THIS AND THAT: Volcano Vista’s Aiden Gonzales was invited to a national combine during Military Appreciation Bowl week in December in Frisco, Texas. … Former Valencia High girls basketball coach Micaela Medina has taken a job as an assistant women’s coach at Western New Mexico, where she was once a player.
