The last of the winter metro events arrives this weekend, with the Albuquerque Metro Wrestling Championships, which run Saturday at Rio Grande with all the rounds scheduled on a single day for varsity.

This will, more or less, be the last major event for metro-area teams before next month’s state tournament in Rio Rancho.

The 13 boys and girls teams from Albuquerque Public Schools are entered: Albuquerque High, Atrisco Heritage, Cibola, Del Norte, Eldorado, Highland, La Cueva, Manzano, Rio Grande, Sandia, Valley, Volcano Vista and West Mesa.

Cleveland, Rio Rancho, St. Pius, Moriarty, Albuquerque Academy, Los Lunas and Valencia also are in the field.

Admission is $5. The finals will likely occur late in the afternoon on Saturday, although there is not yet a definitive time.

A GRAND TIME: Monique Sena of West Mesa last week reached 1,000 career points with the Mustangs in a victory over Albuquerque High.

The senior guard is averaging more than 18 points a game this season for West Mesa.

Sena is at least the second girl in the metro area to reach 1,000 career points. La Cueva High junior guard Jordyn Dyer reached that mark in mid-December, ironically also against Rio Grande.

Corona forward Harper Dunn, who is just a sophomore and is the state’s No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2027, also recently topped 1,000 career points.

THIS AND THAT: Rio Rancho High quarterback J.J. Arellano on Wednesday went on social media and said he had committed to New Mexico Highlands. … Another Rio Rancho athlete, golfer Payton Black, has signed with Division II Montana State-Billings. … Carlsbad High linebacker Colton McKibben has added another D-1 offer, from Texas Tech. He’ll be a junior next fall for the Cavemen.
