SportsCenter in New Mexico? ESPN's signature show coming to Isotopes Park
ESPN will host an episode of SportsCenter at Isotopes Park on July 2.
The network’s flagship sports news show is taking part in a special “SportsCenter: 50 States in 50 Days” this summer with Scott Van Pelt hosting the first show in his customary Washington, D.C., studio and concluding Aug. 16 at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
On July 2, SportsCenter in New Mexico will be at Isotopes Park, where the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes host the El Paso Chihuahuas for a Wednesday day game. Anchor Christine Williamson will host.
“We are really excited and honored to represent the state of New Mexico for SportsCenter’s cross-country tour,” Isotopes General Manager John Traub said. “It’s going to be a great way to showcase the beauty of our state and what it has to offer.”
The show’s primary broadcast (SportsCenter has several airings throughout the day) from Isotopes Park will be at noon Mountain, the same time as the game is scheduled to start.
Fans are encouraged to get to that game early and there will be opportunities for fans to be on TV via crowd shots throughout the broadcast.
“From iconic athletic venues to hometown hidden gems, each stop will spotlight local rivalries, community traditions, and the many ways sports unite fans across the country,” ESPN stated in a news release.
Among the more well-known stops, or events, on the tour:
• UFC 317 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 28
• Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest (and a Yankees/Mets game) in New York on July 4
• Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby in Atlanta on July 14
• The ESPY awards in Los Angeles on July 16
• WNBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis on July 18
ESPN added of the event that it is “featuring a mix of live on-site shows and storytelling segments from a different state each day for 50 consecutive days.”
This is the first time in 20 years ESPN has undertaken a cross-country tour of this magnitude.
In 2005 it hosted a series called SportsCenter Across America.
This go-around, the content is focused on a digital-first audience and pushing content through not only the high-profile SportsCenter, but also promoting the company’s direct-to-consumer platform launch later this year.
