MESA, Ariz. — Senior forward Kenyon Aguino scored 32 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and doled out six assists Thursday night, leading the Volcano Vista boys basketball team to a 69-44 rout of Williams Field High, Arizona, on the first day of the 2025 Nike Tournament of Champions Featuring Hoophall West.

The Hawks (8-0), the top-ranked team in New Mexico, beat the No. 9 team in Arizona. Volcano Vista led by 12 at halftime, then pulled away in the third quarter, led by Aguino (a University of Montana signee), sophomore forward David Lunn and senior guard Rian Gonzales. Gonzales buried three 3-pointers in that third quarter and four on the night.

"We just really defended well. That's where the difference was," Hawks coach Greg Brown said in a phone interview. "We played well."

Volcano Vista next faces Redondo Union, which is ranked in the top 10 in California. The semifinal in that Saguaro bracket (there are over a dozen brackets at this event, scattered throughout the Phoenix metro area) is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday.
